Dog sports and trends are on the rise and the producers of Amazing Pet Expos are supporting active pets by giving pet-lovers the opportunity to see and participate in Lure Coursing at many of their shows across the country this year. In addition to expanding to two day expos in 2016, producers have also announced new elements such as a Contest Stage, designated areas featuring exotic birds, reptiles and amphibians as well as an enhanced Children’s Area along with increased interaction for pets attending the event. Lure Chasing is the perfect sport for pets of any size, shape, age and ability.
The still relatively unknown sport of Lure Chasing, also known as Lure Coursing, is a fast-paced, fun chase sport. Dogs run after a “bunny” lure (usually a white plastic bag) that is attached to a line that is controlled by a machine and a lure operator. The machine runs the line at the speed determined by the lure operator (and the dogs) and the dogs chase the lure. While this is a sport for dogs with a high prey drive, it is also for any pet, even cats from time to time.
“Lure Coursing is always a fun and entertaining addition to the Expos,” says Ethan Barnett, Vice President of Community Partnerships for Amazing Pet Expos, “No matter the dog sport, we’re always happy to watch the pets of our attendees having fun and showing us how to embrace new things. Lure coursing is a great way to exercise your pet no matter their age, breed, or disability.”
Along with being able to watch a few demonstrations of the sport, pet parents will be invited to allow their pups to try out the course for themselves for a small fee. Pet Parents will discover that their pets may benefit from the exercise and excitement of Lure Chasing.
In addition to being open to any pets attending the event, the Lure Course will also feature pets from the Petfinder.com Mega Adoption Area as part of the Rescue Run, which is an opportunity for shelter pets to exercise and show off their skills for potential adopters at the event.
“There are lots of activities and dog sports out there and it’s no secret that dogs often have a little too much energy,” says Meghan Wolfgram with Swift Paws Lure Coursing. “Lure chasing is quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to tire your pup out both mentally and physically and exercising those rescue pets who have been in a crate all day or even longer is beneficial to their health. It also allows the adoptable pets to show off for potential pet parents.”
An Amazing Pet Expo typically features more than 150 pet-friendly exhibitors, live entertainment on two stages as well as demonstrations, low-cost immunizations and discounted microchipping, free nail trims, contests and a huge Mega Adoption Area featuring over 200 adoptable pets.
Admission is always free for this indoor and air-conditioned event. Attendees along with their furry, feathered and reptilian pals can enjoy a new and one-of-a-kind experience where all pets enjoy a fun day or two out with their pet parent(s). All well-behaved pets are welcome, as long as they’re on a fixed lead (or in a carrier) and have proof of age-appropriate rabies vaccines.
