Connection Between Alcohol and Cancer Often Underestimated, Cautions Chapters Capistrano

The health risks involved with drinking alcohol reach far beyond liver damage and can affect the entire body, says Chapters Capistrano.

Many people are aware that too much drinking can lead to liver disease, cirrhosis of the liver, and even liver cancer, but many fail to associate alcohol with other types of cancer as well, reveals a new study by Cancer Research UK (CRUK). The impact of alcohol can be widespread and contribute to a variety of health concerns including increased risk of seven different types of cancer. California rehab center Chapters Capistrano has released a statement to the press regarding the need for increased awareness and education when it comes to alcohol use.

“There are many contradictory studies regarding alcohol consumption,” says Mike Shea, co-owner of Chapters Capistrano. “Some highlight benefits while other focus on risks. It really depends on each individual person and how their body responds. But there have been numerous studies showing a connection between cancer risk and alcohol, and unfortunately this is something many people seem to be unaware of.”

The study was conducted in England and involved 2,100 participants. Of those surveyed, only 13% mentioned cancer as a risk of excessive alcohol consumption. The results revealed that “four in five people (80%) did know that alcohol raises the risk of liver cancer but only 18% knew it heightened the risk of breast cancer.”  Researchers have found that alcohol not only increases the risk of liver and breast cancer, but other cancers as well including bowel, mouth, throat, oesophageal, and laryngeal cancers.

“Although the study was conducted in England, there are probably people throughout the United States who are equally unaware of these risks,” says Shea. “The dangers associated with drinking – both short-term and long-term – often outweigh any potential benefits. There are many other safer, more effective ways of protecting and promoting better health that don’t involve drinking.”

The World Cancer Research Fund charity notes that even minimal consumption of alcohol increases cancer risk. It doesn’t have to stem from excessive or binge drinking.

“Fortunately, there is treatment available to help people overcome alcohol use disorders and be more proactive in protecting their health,” says Shea. “Increased awareness of the risks involved with drinking alcohol as well as available rehab programs is essential. People can still enjoy a fulfilling, rewarding future that does not involve drinking. Addiction treatment can support them in changing their routines and thought patterns to overcome alcoholism.”

Shea encourages people to talk to their loved ones about the dangers associated with drinking and drug use to continue increasing awareness and open communication. It’s important to break down stigmas and misunderstandings when it comes to substance use.

“If you or someone you love is struggling with a substance use disorder, it’s not too late to seek treatment,” assert Shea. “Don’t wait until it has taken a greater toll on your life and health. Start a new chapter in your life today and begin the journey to long-term recovery. Chapters Capistrano can guide you along each step of the way and provide the customized treatment you’re looking for.”
