Chase Dietrich, the founder of Para Polo Paraplegic Water Polo League recently launched a crowdfunding campaign to build support and raise funds for a nonprofit paraplegic water polo league that will help people like himself get out of their wheelchairs, enjoy the freedom of the water and get much-needed exercise combined with fun. The crowdfunding campaign was set up on the most popular platform for such campaigns: Generosity by Indiegogo, with a funding goal of at least $2,500, which was successfully achieved within the first 21 days of the campaign period.
The value of Chase’s idea is evident from the tremendous support it has received from the compassionate online crowd. After sustaining a T8-T9 spinal cord injury from a freak sleep walking incident, founder of Para Polo Chase Dietrich was looking for a way to work out. Being an extremely athletic, competitive and energetic person naturally, his new situation was causing him to put on weight quickly. It should be noted that sufferers of spinal cord injuries tend to have higher rates of diabetes and heart issues due to sitting all day. Due to his natural inclination towards sports and leading an active lifestyle, Chase knew he had to come up with a solution that would help him and many others like him. He believed that the best way to stay in shape was to do so in the form of organized competitive games and, therefore, developed the idea of a Water Polo League that would not require high costs associated with the special sports and exercise equipment needed for people with disabilities.
Chase’s friend coached a local high school water polo team allowed Chase to swim laps. Then it hit him. Para Polo. The beauty of water polo for a paralyzed individual is that it allows them to get out of the chair, into the freedom of the zero gravity pool environment.
The campaign is still alive and Chase is looking to raise as many funds as possible to ensure this dream comes true for him and others. The funds will cover the cost of pool time, referees, floaty belts and coaches. The crowdfunding project offers various pledge options to suit different preferences. A variety of different rewards and perks are also being offered to prize the generosity of those who support the campaign and the project through their monetary contributions, the perks include specially designed items. On the subject of risks and challenges, the Chase is ready to take on any challenges that might occur.
