Chicago, United States One issue with today’s modern world is the awareness of STDs. It’s a sad statistic that sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise.

April is an important month. That’s because it’s STD Awareness Month. Compiled by Safer STD Testing, the following ten facts make for compelling reading:

1. Sexually transmitted diseases are a taboo subject

The sad truth about STDs is many people don’t want to talk about them. But, it’s important that everyone does. That way, there will be more awareness of the topic. And it can help to prevent the spread of STDs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis.

2. Young people are at a higher risk of getting an STD

The CDC (Center for Disease Control) reports that 15-24 year olds are at a high risk of catching an STD.

3. Untreated STDs can lead to reproductive complications

What some people might not realize is that untreated STDs can lead to fertility problems. That means if one wishes to have children in the future, this may not be possible.

4. STDs are preventable

The good news is people can prevent getting an STD. All they need to do is use protection when they have sex. Some STDs can also get treated. But, prevention is always better than the cure!

5. 20 million people get diagnosed with an STD each year

To put that into context, that almost equates to the entire population of New York! As one can appreciate, this is a large and growing problem.

6. Chlamydia is the STD caught by people the most

Out of the most common types of STDs, chlamydia is the one that targets people the most. Each year, 1.5 million people get affected by it.

7. The US has the highest STD infection rate in the world

Compared to other countries, the United States tops the list when it comes to STD infections.

8. Four out of ten teens fail to use a condom

That’s a shocking statistic and one that is set to get worse. One of the reasons for STD Awareness Month is to educate younger generations about STDs.

9. It costs $16 billion to deal with STD infections

The scale of the problem is not only vast but expensive too. People that have safer sex are less likely to have STDs. And they are less likely to increase the costs of dealing with them.

10. 42% of people with syphilis also have HIV

Another sad statistic about STDs is that many people also have HIV. Sure, steps are getting taken to find a cure. But, many people have to spend their lives taking various drugs to control the disease.
