To help reduce risk of substance abuse and promote healthier choices, Chapters Capistrano recommends regular conversations with teens and young adults.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month and serves a as reminder to be proactive in the fight against substance use disorders. Addiction is still a growing problem and one that requires continued attention and awareness efforts. Chapters Capistrano, a rehab center in California, has released a statement to the press regarding the importance of ongoing conversation between parents and children about addiction.

“Talking about substance use and healthy choices isn’t a once-and-done conversation,” says Mike Shea, co-owner of Chapters Capistrano. “It is something that should be discussed over and over again with children as they grow up so that it is continually reinforced. Being open and honest ensures that they have accurate information and feel more comfortable talking to you about questions and concerns they may have.”

According to Dr. Jeffrey Hannel, a family physician, “there is a five times greater risk of alcohol abuse in those who start drinking before the age of 12.” He offers numerous suggestions for parents about having regular discussions with their children and making them more aware of the risks of drinking. One important tip is to remember to listen, not just do all the talking. Parents should get a better understanding of what their children already know, where there are gaps, and what questions they have. This can be used to guide conversation.

“Take advantage of teachable moments,” says Shea. “When you read about someone making unhealthy or unsafe decisions, talk about it. Look around you and use examples from the community, the news, or televisions shows and movies to spark conversation. It’s never too early to start instilling good choices in your children and educating them about the risks of substance use.”

Shea also recommends that parents set clear expectations and consequences for their children. Children should understand what is acceptable and what happens when they break the rules. However, positive behavior and decisions should also be praised and reinforced. In addition, parents should serve as positive role models and monitor their own behaviors and choices in regards to substance use and overall health.

“Work on becoming healthier together,” says Shea. “Addiction prevention is not just about saying no to drugs and alcohol, but also taking steps to combat stress and work through difficult situations in a healthy way. Children should have a strong support system and know that their parents are there for them.”

If a parent is struggling with addiction, seeking treatment can set a positive example for their children. “It shows that they care about their health and wellbeing and that recovery is possible,” adds Shea. “Treatment at a luxury rehab center often incorporates family counseling or therapy to build stronger relationships, work through issues, and promote long-term recovery efforts.” Chapters Capistrano has a family rehab program to support families in overcoming addiction and starting a new chapter in their lives together.
