Look around you and use examples from the community, the news, or televisions shows and movies to spark conversation. It’s never too early to start instilling good choices in your children and educating them about the risks of substance use.”
Shea also recommends that parents set clear expectations and consequences for their children. Children should understand what is acceptable and what happens when they break the rules. However, positive behavior and decisions should also be praised and reinforced. In addition, parents should serve as positive role models and monitor their own behaviors and choices in regards to substance use and overall health.
“Work on becoming healthier together,” says Shea. “Addiction prevention is not just about saying no to drugs and alcohol, but also taking steps to combat stress and work through difficult situations in a healthy way. Children should have a strong support system and know that their parents are there for them.”
