Grunge rock veterans Pearl Jam kicked off their 25th anniversary tour on April 8 in Sunrise, Florida. The tour is scheduled to conclude August 22 with the second of two performances at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
Pearl Jam has gotten away from the pattern of recording an album and then going on tour. Ament said that way of doing things was difficult for him and his bandmates because it required them to be away from their families for long periods of time. They plan to play 30 or 40 shows, take a break, and then play another 30 or 40. Pearl Jam plays songs from all stages of their career, including some that they have not played in years. They have even been known to play entire albums in concert.
The band is considering recording a new album after they finish their current tour. Bassist Jeff Ament told Rolling Stone the band members discussed the idea late last year when they were in South America. He said they talked about what they liked about their last album and what they would like to do differently the next time. They are still early in the planning stages and have no current plans to go into the studio.
Since the band has been around for a quarter century, they will soon be eligible for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Ament said if that happens it would be a major accomplishment for the band, but he would like to continue looking forward, rather than backward.
