Automated Metadata Helps Merlin DAM Users find Images

QUINCY, MA – 18 Apr, 2016 – Is it a bird, a plane, or maybe just a yellow sunset? How cool would it be for a computer to describe what is in your photo and what are predominate colors so you can easily find it later? Just ask some Merlin customers and they can tell you.

MerlinOne’s new Automated Metadata Enhancement (AME) option is being piloted by a handful of Merlin Digital Asset Management system customers-Nebraska Game and Parks, Humane Society of the United States and Save the Children.   As images are imported into their Merlin DAM systems, they are being analyzed for visual content; keywords, colors and even a memorability ranking are added to items automatically based on what is in an image.

“Adding metadata can be a time consuming chore. And without metadata your images cannot be easily found, if ever. Adding metadata can take minutes per image, and if a service is available that does that automatically and somewhat reliably, it’s a win for everyone. Even supplementing existing metadata with colors and additional keywords is useful, “explains David Breslauer, MerlinOne Sales and Marketing Support Manager.

Merlin parses the computer analysis data into metadata fields specifically created for that purpose. Background and foreground colors, automated keywords and a numeric scale for how memorable an image is are all available for searching. Users can search on any of these metadata fields independently or in combination with any other metadata or data ranges.

Jackie Vogt, Photo Librarian at NEBRASKAland Magazine comments about her pilot experience, “It’s exciting Merlin is experimenting with this technology, and I can see the potential in the autotags. It often gets the basics of an image somewhat accurately, and the background/foreground color recognition is nice—as is its ability to assign abstract concepts such as “happy” and “casual.”

Merlin, available as SaaS or on premise,  is a digital asset management solution that allows users to organize thousands or millions of photos, graphics, videos and other multimedia files using fast, precise searching with easy and flexible workflows. Merlin’s industry leading video search technology allows users to actually search for words spoken in the audio tracks.

MerlinOne will be showing Merlin and how the automated computer analysis works at the Henry Stewart DAM show in New York City May 5-6.  Screen share demos can always be scheduled as well.
