Don’t wait for the springtime heavy rains to start wreaking havoc to your home. You can start making some preventive measures now that the precipitation is still quite light. Follow these helpful tips to help you prepare for the rainy experience in spring.
Springtime is always equated with hope and fun-filled times.

It is the perfect time to appreciate blooms in prairies as well as butterflies in the garden. Birds will be singing their beautiful melodies perched atop their nests. Unfortunately, spring is also the time when heavy rains are at their peak. In Pennsylvania, the average rainfall is at 41.45 inches often peaking towards the end of spring in June and July. Now, if you live in Northeastern Pennsylvania, you know that the average annual precipitation can be anywhere from 35.7 to 48.4 inches. And that is a lot of rain.

You don’t have to wait for the springtime heavy rains to start wreaking havoc to your home. You can start making some preventive measures now that the precipitation is still quite light. Here are some tips you can consider to help you prepare for the rainy experience in spring.

• Check your basement for cracks, gaps, or any other unnatural space where water can enter or seep through. If you see any of these cracks or any structural damage, now is the time to fill them up with the appropriate fillers and sealers. Make sure that you are going to fill all cracks and crevices that you see.

• Apply several coatings of waterproofing material on your basement surfaces including the floor and the walls. Make sure that every possible surface is properly coated.

Clean your gutters and downspouts. Debris can accumulate in these areas which can significantly block the efficient flow of water away from your roof. If these channels are obstructed rain water will seep through cracks in your roof and you will have leaks in your ceiling when heavy rains start pouring.

• Make sure that your downspouts are angled in such a way that they empty at least 4 feet away from the outside surface of your walls. Additionally you have to check that channels of water will move water outwards and not towards your home. You may need to check the ground elevation in the perimeter of your foundation. It needs to be gently sloping away from the sides of your wall. This should keep water out from your house.

• Make sure that your drainage system especially your sump pump in the basement is working. This can save you tons of money from removing water from your basement in the event your sump pump fails.

Now, if you are not really sure if you have done everything you can to prepare your home for the heavy rains, you may need to call the services of a professional water damage and restoration company so they can check if you are adequately protected or not.
