The Los Angeles-based firm, Augmented Publishing Group, and Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green have just announced the official launch of their search for black female scientists to be featured in the upcoming book, “Female Scientists of Color Leading the Way — The Journey and Benefits of a Career in Science.”
Lisa Williams, the president of APG, confirmed that Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green, one of fewer than 100 black female physicists in the country, has signed on to head up the search team. Dr. Green recently won a $1.1 million grant to further develop a technology she has pioneered that uses laser-activated nanoparticles to treat cancer.
Williams stated, “We are thrilled to be working with such a respected professional as Dr. Green for this important project. She is incredibly passionate about research and science, and is committed to encouraging African-American women and girls in the area of STEM.”
A nationwide search is currently being conducted for female scientists of color in all fields. Explaining her search process, Dr. Green said, “I am excited to work with Lisa Williams on this book and feel it will be a legacy piece to encourage women of color to pursue a career in science. I will reach out to a select group of female scientists in STEM fields whom I feel are advocates for women in STEM careers, and will spread the word about a great cause.” Williams and Dr. Green have pledged to donate 100 percent of the retail royalties to The Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation.
Scheduled for a summer release, “Female Scientists of Color Leading the Way — The Journey and Benefits of a Career in Science,” will feature a chapter spotlighting each of the selected scientists who will share their insights and experiences, as well as bust the myths and misconceptions surrounding careers in science and math.
Williams described the book as “a powerful resource for African-American women currently in fields of science, those in college and young African-American girls in school.”
According to Williams, several scientific leaders have expressed interest in participating. She and Dr. Green expect to make an announcement revealing the final selections by May 16th.
“We anticipate a lot of exposure around this project, for both The Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation and the people we select to be featured in the book. We really want to showcase those professionals who are actually in the trenches, working hard every day and who are willing to share their experience to benefit a great cause and toward the success of finding a cure for cancer! That is what will make this a win-win project.”
