Clarence Fisher to Attend the 22nd Annual Representation of the Tomb of the Unknowns at Floral Haven

The re-enactment began in 1995 and has been passed on through each class of cadets. 12 cadets have been hand selected to participate in a four-month training, evaluating their physical fitness, ceremonial precision and knowledge of the Tomb of the Unknowns. The cadets who are participating in the program are the finest representation of this cadet program, and they come forward with the support of the squadron’s adult senior members and the squadron’s Cadet Flag Patrol. These soldiers will march rain or shine just like the soldiers guarding the original Tomb.

“I wish more people knew about this program,” said Fisher. “I had dinner with many of the cadets after my speech in February. That’s where I first learned about what they are doing with the reenactment. These children are our future. How brave and valiant they are. To think that these young people stand guard night and day through rain or whatever weather comes their way. Living in Oklahoma, it’s not uncommon to experience all four seasons in a single day. Their eagerness to learn and help others succeed has made a huge impact on me.”

Throughout the event, Flag Patrol Cadets will correct over 4000 flags in the course of their patrol. These cadets are an important part of creating a sense of legitimacy and respect for the ceremony, and those attending can expect to see the epitome of military precision in their care for the flags.

The Starbase Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol says the purpose of the ceremony is four-fold. First, the aim is to ensure that the community does not forget the sacrifices of soldiers, and especially those who died as unknown soldiers. Second, the goal is to provide those without means to travel to the original Arlington National Cemetery ceremony a place to grieve for their loved ones. Third, the gathering is an opportunity to join together in remembrance of the heroic deeds of the soldiers that will never come to light. Finally, the event organizers aim to give young people a sense of pride in the accomplishments of the soldiers, giving them an example to follow as they grow into responsibility and honor.

Captain Gary Sutherland is the officer in charge of the Youth on Guard and Flag Patrol teams and represents the squadron in extending everyone a personal invitation to witness the ceremony and participate in giving honor to the unknown soldiers.
