Barbra had her heart set on acting from an early age. After graduating from high school at the age of 16, she moved from Brooklyn to Manhattan where she tried to find acting jobs. She appeared in a few off-Broadway shows with minimal success. While awaiting acting parts, she made ends meet by singing in nightclubs in Greenwich Village. At 19, Streisand was spotted in one club by a Broadway producer. He cast her in a small part in “I Can Get It For You Wholesale” and she succeeded in drawing attention to her powerful voice. Leonard Bernstein was one of her first famous fans. After her solo number in the play, Mr. Bernstein gave her a standing ovation, and so the rest of the theater willingly followed suit. The following year she was signed to a recording contract and the rest is history.
