SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The NBA champion and former coach, Rasheed Wallace, teams up with animation executive, Saddler Ward, to introduce Sacramento kindergarteners to “Honeydew & Marylu,” a book for early readers. They join forces with the Sacramento City Unified School District to increase literacy by planning to visit six local area schools between June 9-10. Each classroom receives a copy of “Honeydew & Marylu.”
“Research shows that improving reading proficiency in the early grades improves a student’s chances of success throughout school and life,” says SCUSD Superintendent Jose L. Banda. “Reading is the key to learning all other subjects.”
The “Honeydew & Marylu” Sacramento tour kicks off with a media event on Thursday, June 9, at Parkway Elementary School in South Sacramento.

“Honeydew & Marylu” is written by Wallace and illustrated by Ward, the animation producer of MTV’s “Station Zero” and “Word World,” PBS Kids’ pilot. The children’s book is about overcoming fears and asking for help. A big race sets the premise for the story. Honeydew thinks she is a big girl, but she has not yet learned to tie her shoes. Eventually, the girl asks for help. The book includes a glossary, a rarity for children’s books, and step-by-step instructions to tie shoe laces.
