Statistics show that 70 percent of Nebraska residents whom attend rehab is mostly caused by alcohol addiction. Substance abuse is devastating on individuals, families and communities. How can we stop addiction and help those seek the right help?
Everyone understands the need for detoxification as the necessary first step towards leading a generally more sober life.

However, a lot of individuals are often confused about several terms that they hear about detoxification such as medical detox, social detox, and even rapid detox. And then there is acute detox and sub acute detox not to mention an inpatient detox and a residential detox. Amidst this oftentimes confusing terms, you might as well hope that healthcare practitioners would use a much simpler way of calling detox treatments. For starters, you may need to understand what a social model detox Nebraska program or anywhere else in the country is all about.

Social model detox is basically intended for individuals who really do not have a deep-seated drug problem or alcoholism issue. It’s like this, social model detox is for the most benign of all drug addiction cases while medical detox is for more severe drug and alcohol addiction problems and rapid detox is for those with life threatening drug and alcohol addiction problems. This is almost similar to saying that acute detox is for rapid detox as sub acute detoxification is for social model detox. Additionally, you can think of social model detox as clinically equivalent to a residential detox program and a sub acute detox program. Medical detox and rapid detox on the other hand will be more closely associated with acute detox and inpatient detox with the latter requiring intensive medical treatments.

To put it simply, social model detox is for individuals who may not really be dependent on illicit drugs or alcohol. Neither have they become addicted to these substances. As such, the detoxification process proceeds in a much more relaxed manner often relying on psychosocial and behavioral interventions to help the individual get through the ordeal of withdrawal. Additionally, since there are no medication protocols involved or used for the detox process, the whole detoxification process in a social model detox program may take significantly longer. Whereas medical detox can be completed within 5 to 7 days, a social model detox program will often require a much longer period, typically up to 14 days some even requiring up to 30 days, in order to get rid of the substance from the body.

And since the detox process relies mostly on the abilities of the therapist to help individuals manage their drug and alcohol abuse issues, the success of the detox program largely hinges on the willingness of the individual to accept the different therapeutic modalities. It is for this reason that detox facilities that operate on the social model detox principle should have a wide variety of therapeutic modalities to offer each individual client. Unlike medical detox where medication protocols are standardized, the results of psychodynamic and behavioral therapies vary immensely primarily because of individual differences. This should always be taken into consideration when designing a plan of care intended for individuals receiving social model detox.

In short, social model detox is for individuals who are not necessarily addicts yet. Nonetheless, they need to have an open mind and the motivation to really change their lives forever.
