South Bay Cafeterias Offer New Types of Produce Each Month

Harvest of the Month Program Encourages Healthy Eating Habits

Cafeterias in all South Bay schools began participating in the Harvest of the Month program this past academic year. Each month, students were introduced to seasonal produce, and they were able to easily incorporate these fruits and vegetables into their meals. Posters at the salad bars promoted new foods, which were available for taste tests. This program will continue to provide students the opportunity to safely try different types of fruits and vegetables that they may not have otherwise known about.

The Network for a Healthy California sponsors this program throughout the entire state. Its goal is to stress the importance of encouraging healthy eating habits early on. Studies have shown that a strong focus on nutrition combined with daily physical activity boosts the overall physical and mental capabilities of students. School attendance, positive attitudes, and the ability to better learn new material are all significantly improved by a healthy diet. Coupled with the in-school initiatives are informative newsletters which families receive monthly. These highlight nutritional facts about produce grown in California. Students can share their new in-school experiences with family members. Easy-to-make recipes and trivia are also featured on the newsletter to reinforce South Bay’s commitment to all-encompassing and applicable education.

Individualized Education Plan is a Foundational Building Block

South Bay has made improvements on its Individualized Education Plan (IEP) throughout the 2016-2017 school year. The IEP is written for each public school child who is eligible to receive special education. This document is a consistent team effort among educators in the school district and is reviewed at least once a year. 

The special education department remains committed to three main beliefs:

1. All students benefit from relevant and rigorous instruction in the least restrictive environment.

2. All students  will have access to a continuum of programs and instructional services that meet their individual needs.

3. All students thrive from positive relationships and a strong sense of community.

The IEP is a core element of this program’s efficacy, ensuring that students are provided with all resources they may need in order to succeed. The IEP covers a wide range of details, including a summary of a student’s current levels in both academic and social behaviors. After examining a student’s current levels, achievable and measurable goals can be calculated and listed in the document.

Other elements include accommodations and modifications to improve the educational experience in the classroom and any additional services a student may need. South Bay continues to focus on bettering the learning experience for special education students, always believing that students with special needs are general education students first.

Staff, Students, Volunteers and Community Organizations among Recipients

South Bay Union School District collects nominations throughout the school year to host recognition events for the district’s champions. These students, parents/guardians, teachers, teams, and community members have demonstrated unparalleled dedication to the district by supporting goals within the individual schools as well as the overall community. Superintendent Katie McNamara continues to promote this district champion program due to these individuals’ positive impact on the community.

South Bay is committed to recognizing the efforts of the individuals who consistently add to the community’s missions. IAIO-NARDO Aerospace Laboratory, an international aviation innovative organization, is engaged in airline travel innovation and aircraft industry design. Recently, on behalf of IAIO-NARDO, Mr. Li Chen, the Chief Innovation Officer of the laboratory provided a detailed explanation of “aviation brand operator” at Frankfurt Airport in an interview with the press. 

Mr. Li Chen said that top management in many well-known aviation companies still have their understanding on brand building at the initial phase based on unquantifiable evaluation. So when working on brand establishment, they focus on the stepwise development activities or the pressurized management on public opinions. This is why they ignore the special technology owned by aviation companies and sustainability of brand establishment.

Mr. Li Chen also explained why the traditional aviation companies are fast losing in the competitive market.

“For traditional aviation companies, the organic melting between aviation technology and brand art is just the bottleneck encountered by brand establishment. Because of this bottleneck, tracing back to the source cannot be released efficiently. In order to break through this bottleneck, IAIO-NARDO integrates all the problems encountered by aviation industry, trying to solve them one by one.”

While speaking on behalf of IAIO-NARDO, Mr. Li Chen also gave an example to substantiate his argument. “Last year, the world-wide popular B-5665 Create dream planes was listed in 2017 National Image Aircraft Painting list. Research Finds Youngsters Are Drinking Too Much Sugary Drinks

It’s shocking that teenagers are drinking the equivalent of a bathtub of sugary drinks a year.

A UK based research has shown that millennial teenagers are drinking an equivalent amount of bath full every year. Cancer Research UK has found out that teenagers aged between 11 to 18 years each drink almost 234 cans of soft drinks per year.

The same research has shown a similar trend to those aged between four and ten. The researchers have found out that members of the younger age group only drink about half as much as their older counterparts. However, with their younger bodies, the damage that their bodies receive can be just as much or worse.

Last March 2017, the Government of UK implemented an additional tax on soft drinks with added sugar. Lower taxes were given to beverages with 5g of sugar per 100ml, while those with more than 8g per 100ml faced a higher rate.

It has been reported that the additional taxes added up to £18 to £24 to the price of a liter of fizzy drink when the full cost is passed on to the consumer.

Juices made with pure fruit extracts were exempted as they do not carry any added sugar. On the other hand, drinks composing of high milk content were also exempted because of the calcium that they contain.

A regular can (330ml) of cola can contain up to 35 grams of sugar. This surpasses the maximum recommended daily intake of sugar for five-year-olds which is 19 grams a day. Children aged 11 and above are only recommended 30 grams of sugar a day, which is still lower than the content of a can of cola.

The data presented by the Cancer Research UK was based on the findings of the National Diet and Nutrition Survey. The research showed that adults and young children consume almost twice the amount of sugar recommended for them to consume every day.

11 to 18-year-olds, on the other hand, have it worse. They are found to consume almost three times the maximum recommended limit of sugar on a daily basis. The same research showed that sugary drinks are the main culprit of this growing problem.

According to Alison Cox, the director of prevention at Cancer Research UK, “It’s shocking that teenagers are drinking the equivalent of a bathtub of sugary drinks a year.

“We urgently need to stop this happening and the good news is that the Government’s sugar tax will play a crucial role in helping to curb this behavior. The ripple effect of a small tax on sugary drinks is enormous, and it will give soft drinks companies a clear incentive to reduce the amount of sugar in drinks.” He added.

“When coupled with the Government’s plan to reduce sugar in processed food, we could really see an improvement to our diets.

“But the Government can do more to give the next generation a better chance, by closing the loophole on junk food advertising on TV before the 9 pm watershed. The UK has an epidemic on its hands, and needs to act now.”

The health research body believes that the imposed tax could help prevent 3.7 million cases of obesity over the next decade. These findings of the research are worsened by the fact that another internationally-based research found out that British children are among the least active youngsters in the world.

Mike June’s new single is “Alright.”

Mike June makes decidedly timely music, but he does far more than document an era of unease.  He has mastered the precarious balance between despair and hope and rendered it melodic across five albums, including Poor Man’s Bible, released on Slothtrop Records in 2016. One year and one brutal election later, June is pushing that button hard.  The results are clear in the three-songs that comprise June’s new single, Alright, available everywhere July 14.

Mike June makes decidedly timely music, but he does far more than document an era of unease. He has mastered the precarious balance between despair and hope and rendered it melodic across five albums, including Poor Man’s Bible, released on Slothtrop Records in 2016.

“It’s discovering artists like Mike June that makes this all worthwhile; he can certainly write a song; and the theme throughout of the ‘working man of all colours and persuasions is being trampled on’ but his execution of those songs is second to none,” writes the Rocking Magpie music blog of Poor Man’s Bible. They add that June “certainly has his finger on the button in a way Bruce hasn’t had for 20 years or more.”

One year and one brutal election later, June is pushing that button hard. The results are clear in the three-songs that comprise June’s new single, Alright, out July 14 on Slothtrop. The single features the Raleigh, NC band The Backsliders and also guest stars June’s wife, Jess Klein, on backing vocals.

Born in rural New York and raised in New Jersey, June did a stint in Austin (where he released three records) before moving to North Carolina. Music has always been a big part of June’s life. “I started pretending to play music at around age 3, miming Kiss songs with the neighbors, and strumming on my Grandfather’s guitar while he sang Hank Williams’ songs. I got into my first bands in high school, and formed my first professional band, Wide Load Joad, in 1999 before going solo and forming Mike June & The Dirty Doves in 2001,” June remembers.

Over the years, June’s focus on the very real stories of very real people has remained intact. “His music is what my generation needs, and what older generations need to remember. He sings love songs about the human experience – sometimes his own,” writes William Harries Graham in The Austin Chronicle, “I consider him a storyteller of the revolution.”

The title track on June’s new single was written for June’s wife after the 2016 election. “‘I felt like we needed some reassurance in the house. It’s easy to think that your problems are huge when you’re staring them right in the face, but in the big picture most people in the world struggle everyday, and that struggle is our common thread.” It’s a powerhouse ballad – fuzzy with electric guitar and propelled by insistent drums.

Alright also features a pitch-perfect cover of Lou Reed’s 1989 song “Busload of Faith.” “I think it’s a perfect song for this time. I feel a deep connection to Lou Reed. We were both raised in the New York suburbs, English majors, raised on doo-wop and early rock and roll. I hope we did the song some justice,” says June. The song darkly lists all the things we can’t depend on, referencing concentration camps, abortion clinic protesters, and the fallibility of God. June delivers the verses with perfect grim realism that would do Reed proud.

“How Long” is driven by slow acoustic strumming, slide guitar, and a bittersweet ache in June’s voice. According to June, “The song is a bit of sarcasm and I’m taking in joy in being able to witness the strange times we are living in. You can’t go back in time, so you might as well enjoy the moment.”
