Freedom from Fractures: Free Bone Health Screening Events in July from American Bone Health

OAKLAND, CA – 7 Jul, 2017 – Stay strong, stay independent, take the first step today is the message American Bone Health wants adults to take to improve their bone health. The 5th Annual bone health awareness day called Freedom from Fractures, helps adults develop a road map to improve their bone health and reduce their risk of breaking a bone. Last year, the event identified that more than 50% of the participants were at high risk of having a fracture in the next ten years.

“There are 2 million preventable fractures every year in this country,” says Kathleen Cody, Executive Director, “We want people to know the steps they can take lower their changes of having a life changing fracture.” 

Participants learn how to reduce their risk of breaking a bone through an assessment conducted by American Bone Health trained Peer Educators. The validated, web-based FORE Fracture Risk Calculator™ uses clinical factors that generates a graphic result of low, moderate, or high risk. Given the results, the peer educators discuss a road map to better bone health.

Stay away from negativity and seek out positivity

Take a long hard look at the people who surround you and the messages they give off. If you declared you were about to jump out of a plane, what would they say? Many people would say you had taken leave of your sense or question why you would want to do such a thing.

The point is, there doesn’t have to be a point. Not everything in life has to be about getting something in return.

“The thrill for many of our skydiving newbies is that they want to have-a-go, just experience the thrill and the rush of adrenalin, as well as experience views of our fantastic planet that only a handful of people will ever get to see and feel,” Jennifer says.

Be aware of your own body language and what it saying to people

Imagine declaring your intention to do something big or make a change – does your body language let you down?

When you make your declaration – I’m going skydiving! – did your body language back you up by standing tall, smiling, holding your head up and making eye contact. Did you speak slowly or did it all come tumbling out before you could change your mind?

All too often, when life weighs us down, it weighs us down physically too. The next time you meet a crowd of new people, for example, or face an equally daunting task, be aware of your body language what you do with your hands, if you smile or not and so on. These signs all send subtle signals to your friends, colleagues, family and strangers too.

Ditch those negative voices and messages inside your head

This isn’t about hearing voices but something psychologists and counselors call self-talk.

These are the messages you give yourself when you ‘fail’ at something. So, the dinner you made last night that didn’t taste so good or you dropped your coffee or you didn’t get the job – when something ‘bad’ happens or something doesn’t go your way, what do your inner feelings and voice tell you.

Do they confirm you have never been any good at cooking, or that you have always been clumsy, or that you didn’t deserve the job?

Or do you evaluate what needs to change? Maybe you just need to add more seasoning to the dish, or that dropping a coffee cup isn’t the end of the world or maybe you can see why you didn’t get that job, but you will have learnt valuables lessons for next time?

Prepare when facing something unusual or challenging

When we face something new, we can take a blind leap of faith and when it doesn’t go to plan, it compounds our negativity.

When you are facing a challenge, being prepared and understanding some of the feelings that you could face will help you get into a better frame of mind.

As you sit on the edge of the plane, waiting to take the leap with your instructor, the fear will rush past you as fast as the wind 10,000 feet off the ground. Houses are match boxes, people unrecognizable, just the vast blue sky and the breath-taking mountains beneath.

You will be fearful. You will be gripped, possibly paralyzed with fear. But take that leap and you will soon feel how fear can be as exhilarating as it is paralyzing.

Make a list of positive and wonderful things

Everyone’s self-belief at some point takes a knock. Self-confidence needs to be nurtured, sometimes more than others.

So, when things have not been going how you want them, you may need to search for the silver lining the clouds. It can be as simple as sitting down and making a list of things that are going well.

It also means looking for the good things that came out of the stuff that was not so good. Rather than accepting failure as absolute, look for the little glimmers of silver in those ‘failures’.

Maybe getting that job wasn’t so bad after all because your boss made you a better offer…

Skydiving is just one extreme challenge you can set yourself to reignite your self-confidence. There are other activities you can do too. Why not take the plunge and try something different?

The D2 units are similar to the previous units with the addition of an entrance foyer and an increase in size of 1,324 square feet or 123 square meters. For those who prefer larger rooms and more space, or simply want their family to be more comfortable, these units are fantastic and still much more affordable than the average, based on size.

5-Bedroom + Utility + Yard

It is usually difficult to pioneer a new niche and make others follow. Rather, many persons and even professionals prefer to be lead than to lead the way. Everyone is afraid of making mistakes hence not willing to try out something new; however, this is not the case of Shunsuke Hayashi who championed the idea of accessibility in digital design and placed him at the top of his field.

“When I first found the passion for UX and UI design, I was deeply drawn to the information architect and the fact that I could organize things in a way that I could offer audience a cleaner and simpler web and app design to increase ease in navigation. But throughout the years I’ve realized that to be a good user interface and user experience designer is not JUST about making things easy to use and pretty for our eyes to look at– it is to create an inclusive environment. Digital design has always been a combination of technical and artistic skills. These two attribute are inseparable yet they are rarely found in a single individual. Around the Internet, we can see beautiful examples of the interaction of technology and visually appealing windows to information; technology has come to stay revolutionize the world.

Digital design has to do with excellence. As part of the Internet, digital design has tribe for excellence, which usually means an inherent visual appeal and an organic user interaction. UX and UI design work to accomplish that, but more often than not, most designers have forgotten another aspect of user interaction – accessibility.

Accessibility as part of web design standard was first heard of in 1999 at the Web Accessibility Initiative, part of the World Wide Web Consortium and it was updated in 2008 with the version 2.0. Despite this, the industry always regards accessibility as an extra to web design. However, there are individuals who spend time and resources trying to better the accessibility of web designs.

The importance of accessibility is sometimes left aside; without it, impaired people would struggle and maybe unable to get access to important information on the Internet. More and more we see how effective and reliable online tools and information can be for our society. Accessibility is a tool that provides a discreet environment where everyone is truly welcome and is able to take advantage of what the Internet has to offer. However, accessibility should not be only focused on supporting the public, but it can also be a powerful tool to increase the demand of businesses online, where content becomes more accessible to more people.

Cueing from the fact that accessibility is an all-important tool in web design, Shunsuke Hayashi, an accomplished stellar digital designer, a graduate of the Pratt Institute in New York, said: “People often ask me where does accessibility and design meet. Should we take on one or the other? My answer is take on accessibility to make your design even better”. Hayashi adds his idea on accessibility on his design as a way to demonstrate to every designer in the industry that he walks his talk. Hayashi is at the top in his field as his designs are very well appreciated globally. He incorporates this thought on his designs, not only as a personal goal, but also as a way to encourage others in the industry to understand the real importance of accessibility. He represents the side of the design industry trying to change the perception of accessibility with their work.

The digital industry has created a portal for the world to access content and information as never before, it will certainly improve in the future and we as society, will increasingly rely on this content and information. Accessibility has led us to reform on architecture, physical design and other areas; however, Hayashi leads the way in incorporating accessibility in digital design.

The White Metal Platinum Still Trailing the Yellow Metal Gold

DENVER, COLORADO – 8 Jul, 2017 – Platinum has been called “white gold” or “rich man’s gold”. However, for about six years, this white super metal has been taking a back seat to its yellow colored cousin – Gold. 

From 1988 to 2011, platinum maintained an average price premium to gold of more than $180 per ounce. However, after 2011, in a reversal of fortune, platinum has generally been lagging behind gold in price. As of July 6, 2017, gold closed at $1,225.15 per ounce versus platinum’s closing at $ 912.50 per ounce. Thus, gold is now trading at a substantial $ 312.65 per ounce premium to platinum. This represents a percentage premium of 34.26%, far above historical norms. 

Theories abound as to why this recent aberration in the platinum/gold ratio has taken place. Some analysts suggest that the Great Recession and financial crisis of 2008-2010, and the subsequent economic malaise that followed, dislocated the platinum/gold ratio because platinum is not typically perceived as a “monetary equivalent” like gold. Gold for example has tremendous liquidity on many trading exchanges and platforms, and is widely perceived as an alternative “store of value” in competition with paper currencies such as the U.S. dollar, the Euro, Japanese Yen, U.K. Pound, Chinese Yuan, and Indian Rupee. In addition, during times of economic turmoil and uncertainty, gold has often been accumulated by global investors and money center banks to provide a hedge or stabilizer against other asset categories such as stocks, bonds, and real estate. 

Other commentators have suggested the forecast reduction in the quantity of platinum used in automobile catalytic converters has depressed the white precious metal. In addition, insomuch as platinum has been more widely used in industrial applications because of its remarkable resistance to corrosion and high electrical conductivity (uses include catalytic converters, electrodes, electrical contacts, dentistry tools, laboratory equipment, and fine jewelry); it would seem logical that platinum’s price would be more pressured than gold, during a deep recessionary period. 

So does this create risk or opportunity in owning platinum compared to gold? Well, the answer may be both. On a short to intermediate term basis (less than 6 months), the stronger technical behavior of gold seems to favor the yellow metal. On the other hand, on a longer term basis, this author believes platinum may be poised to outperform gold in a reversion back to its historic supremacy. And, If global economies continue to pick up their growth pace, and the U.S. Congress successfully passes a more simplified tax code with lower top end rates and ower corporate tax rates, along with fiscal stimulus such as a national infrastructure bill, look for platinum to begin outpacing the yellow metal. 

Platinum can be accumulated or traded in various forms including physical bars, ingots, collectible coins, and exchange traded funds. In addition, platinum commodity contracts are widely traded, for investors with high risk profiles. As a registered investment advisory firm, we prefer to use exchange traded funds because of their daily market liquidity, and the ability to enter and execute price activated limit orders. 

Certainly, precious metals have an appropriate place in many investors’ portfolios, as some long term studies have shown precious metal allocations in the range of 5% to 15% in an overall portfolio can provide higher risk adjusted returns relative to stock or bond portfolios absent of precious metals. However, its up to you and your investment advisor to make a final determination as to which precious metal to invest in, and what percentage allocation is most appropriate for your age, and risk tolerance. 

Finally, all investors should be aware that despite their rarity, both platinum and gold can be highly volatile with no guarantee of principal. Outside forces such as geo-political upheaval, and central bank interest rate intervention, both in rising and declining interest rate environments, can cause substantial gyrations in precious metals.
